It sustains longer because the metal vibrates. The record is not without distortion, however, Rosamilia recalling: “We had a Zemaitis in the studio, which is basically a guitar that’s made entirely out of metal. The song gave us the vibe of the record, the title of the record, all of it right then and there.” The third time we played it, it would have been recognisable to you. “We ran through it, and in 25 minutes it was done. “Brian played it once, just him playing the guitar,” remembered Rosamilia. “I don’t know, I think I was waiting for it.” “I just reached out and grabbed it,” said Fallon. I was a firm believer in the magic of things, and I obviously couldn’t afford a real one, so I would build it.” “I discovered that was the sound they were using on all those Sam Cooke and Elvis Presley records,” Fallon this said. And he was chasing it to the extent that he was in the process of gutting a reissue and rebuilding it with vintage parts. ![]() The album’s title refers to the fact frontman Brian Fallon was chasing a certain tone for the album: that of a 1959 Fender Bassman. Which did lead to a couple of ideas I don’t think we would’ve had otherwise.” For last record we had about five weeks and quite the arsenal of gear to tear through. Guitarist Alex Rosamilia said at the time: “For Sink Or Swim, we had a week or so and what we brought to the studio. Over five weeks at Sage & Sound and Mad Dog Studios the band pulled together a masterpiece that added breadth and beef to the band’s already distinctive sound, with just enough pop sensibility to smash down the doors to mainstream radio. ![]() Whatever the case, I’ve stuck with this song ever since, and it has remained not only a great source of catharsis, but a great example of a real band making real music that speaks to you.Death, it turns out, was not an option. ![]() This connection seemed to come as something of a comfort for me, and the way that ‘The ’59 Sound’ continued to help me deal with my own issues felt too right to be changed by my somewhat incorrect interpretations of the lyrics. “Back then it seemed like there was a genuine feeling of excitement going on that I don’t think is necessarily happening right now.”įor me, the song almost seemed to speak to my own feelings of loss in life, and reminded me of how music affected me at those times. “I have this vision of 1959 where Elvis was playing and there were problems in this country about how things were going to work but there was this youthful excitement in the music, too,” frontman Brian Fallon explained in 2009. The song’s title itself stems from the notion of hearing the music that makes you feel free and excited, similar to how Elvis fans felt about the future of music when they first heard him play. Specifically written about the death of a close friend, the tune seems to almost reference the loss of an elder relative at times, with its lyrics seeming to be able to relate to anyone and their situations in whatever way they want it to relate. What happened next was that I managed to discover the title track from their second record, The ’59 Sound.įrom the start of the song, I was almost instantly hooked, with the music picking me up and not letting go, even after those lyrics began talking about matters of life and death, and wondering about the music that accompanies these scenarios. It probably took one or two years before I actually started to listen to what the critics had been saying and decided to check out their work. But whatever the case, their’s was a name that began to pop up from time to time in alternative circles, leaving me unaware they had just released their second record. I wasn’t aware that they were a band, and I certainly wasn’t aware they had just released a new album. I think the first time I heard of The Gaslight Anthem, I had a feeling someone was just quoting random words from the dictionary.
